Lateral Transfer Testing Process

Applicant MUST contact a recruiter to begin application process. Lateral Transfer candidates should expect to attend a minimum of 3 in-person visits to Fort Wayne during the testing phase.

Complete Application for Employment

Applications for lateral transfers will be accepted from January 3, 2023 – March 10, 2023, at 1700 hrs. Applicants must have a Tier 1 Certification or equivalent to apply. 25th Lateral Class fitness test scheduled for March 23 – March 24, 2023

Fitness Test

The fitness test will take place at the Fort Wayne Police Academy, 7602 Patriot Crossing, Fort Wayne IN 46816. Portions of the fitness test will be conducted outside, and candidates should dress for the weather.

  • Vertical Jump of 16”
  • 29 Sit-Ups in 1 minute
  • 300 Meter Sprint in 71 seconds or less
  • 25 Push-Ups
  • 1.5 mile run in 16:28 or less

*4-minute break is provided between the 300-meter sprint and 21 push-ups.

Exit Standards from Academy

  • Vertical Jump of 16”
  • 29 Sit-Ups in 1 minute
  • 300 Meter Sprint in 71 seconds or less
  • 25 Push-Ups
  • 1.5 mile run in 16:28 or less

Candidates will receive the time and date of their fitness test after passing the written test. This information will be received via email by becky.boles@cityoffortwayne.org.

25th Lateral Class oral interviews scheduled for March 23 – March 24 following the fitness test.

Oral Interview

Candidates will participate in a formal oral interview with a panel potentially comprised of citizens of the Fort Wayne community and members of the Fort Wayne Police Department. This is a professional interview and candidates are encouraged to dress professionally.

  • Lateral candidates will participate in the interview on the same day as their fitness test.
  • Candidates will be provided access to a locker room and showers during this phase.

Location: Fort Wayne Police Academy, 7602 Patriot Crossing, Fort Wayne IN 46816.

25th Lateral Class background investigations will take place between March 27 – April 21, 2023.

Background Investigation & Voice Stress Test

Candidates will complete a thorough background investigation, submitting information to their background investigator for review online. Candidates will complete a voice stress analysis to determine truthfulness in the following areas: criminal history, drug usage, morality, and honesty.

Out of state Lateral Transfer Candidates must complete the waiver process. Applicants will have 1 year to complete the process. There is a $50 Waiver Application Fee. For more information see this link: https://www.in.gov/ilea/frequently-asked-questions/#another%20state

During the background investigation phase of testing Lateral Candidates should submit the following to becky.boles@cityoffortwayne.org

    • Must have proof of high school graduation or GED
    • Must document certification from another state (copy of basic certificate)
    • Must provide a copy of curriculum (not the daily schedule) from the basic course attended
    • Must document at least one year of paid, full-time law enforcement service (letter from former department stating how long the officer worked for them, what their duties were, and that they left in good standing.
    • Must provide a list of no more than one page of courses the officer considers the most significant in-service and specialized training completed.
  • 25th Lateral Class psychological testing will take place May 1, 2023.
  • Physicals for candidates not in PERF are scheduled for May 15 – May 19, 2023.

Psychological Testing, Interview & Physical

Candidates will complete a psychological test, interview, and physical during this stage of testing. Testing will be conducted at a location in Indianapolis, IN. Applicants will be responsible for paying ½ (half) of the cost of the physical at the time of appointment. Only debit or credit cards may be used to make payments. The company will not process insurance. The applicant’s cost is approximately $530 and is subject to change.

Indiana Officers already in PERF are not required to have a new physical.

Candidates should keep their receipt. Applicants who are hired and successfully complete their 1st year of employment can be reimbursed for the cost of the physical.

Out of state Lateral Transfer Applicants must have 1 year of Law Enforcement experience.

  • 25th Lateral Applicant interviews will take place on June 26, 2023. Interviews are approximately 20 minutes in length.
  • Orientation for the 25th Lateral Class will take place on June 26 at the completion of interviews.

Board of Public Safety Interview

Applicants will participate in an interview with the Board of Public Safety. This is a professional interview and applicants should dress appropriately.

25th Lateral Class Training Day 1 and swearing in on July 17, 2023.

Candidates who pass all stages and are accepted move on to our Lateral Officer Training Program (LOTP). The program runs between 4 – 6 weeks and will take place at the Fort Wayne Police Academy, 7602 Patriot Crossing, Fort Wayne IN 46816.

A Lateral Candidate must possess a Tier 1 Certification or equivalent to apply for a lateral transfer.

Out of state Lateral Transfers will be required to show that the academy they attended for their Tier 1 Certification provided a minimum of 600 hrs. of training AND will be required to provide their training curriculum.

In-State Indiana Law Enforcement Officers, currently in PERF (Public Employees Retirement Fund) can be over 39 years of age

Z

Must possess a High School Diploma, the equivalent, or a G.E.D. Further education beyond High School is preferred.

Z

Correctable vision to 20-30 in each eye.

Z

Current, valid, Driver’s License

Z

Qualified applicants must complete and pass pre-employment testing.

Z

Physically and mentally able to perform essential job functions of the patrol officer position.
